Mid
Season Awards
With
a few days till the All Star game its time I made a list of my mid-season
awards. I’m going to work mine
slightly different since there is some cases where I don’t feel the winner of
an award really deserved it. Then
why would I be giving it to this player?
Well the verbiage of the award and the spirit of the award, MVP tends to
be a player that lead his team far but there are some players that are note
worthy that are on a losing team but doing very well. Rather than explaining it why don’t we just jump into it,
here are my mid-season awards
AL
MVP: Mike Trout

It’s
hard to imagine that Trout was having an “off year” at the beginning of the
season and to be honest he wasn’t.
I took a look at him earlier this year and his numbers were fine and now
he’s just hitting the fastball better than he was before. Overall no one is surprised that he’s
here
Sabermetric MVP: Mike Trout
I
don’t think I need to say it twice.

This
is closer than you think but its still King Felix’s game. He’s having one of his best seasons in
his career this year and it shows having a WAR a full Win more than Jon Lester
who is in second with a WAR of 4.2.
A strike out an inning and very close to almost 10/9 average is quite
the accomplishment even for the King.

This
was such a close call but in the end I decided to give it to Tanaka because of
how dominate he has been and he’s one of the only reasons the Yankees were in
the playoff talks. Sadly I doubt
that this story will end well since as of this article he was diagnosed with a
partial tear in his Ulnar Collateral ligiment and will likely need Tommy John
surgery. Hopefully he gets back
and has a successful career since there are few pitchers that are more fun to
watch.

This
is why I made the category of “sabermetric MVP” but that doesn’t mean I’m
taking anything away from how good Gomez has been this year. I admit right off the bat I was
completely not sold on this guy after last year where he broke out. This year I swore he was a fluke and
wouldn’t repeat what he did and refused the numbers. Well so did he in many ways since he’s batting so well with
such a low BB%. As of now I love
this guy: I love his game and I love his over the top attitude. Don’t change Carlos never change!

While
he’s doing far better than Gomez overall there’s something that he can’t
control. His team is in last place,
which severely hurts his chances to actually win MVP, but he is defiantly worth
the award if you could look past that detail.

Does
it really need to be said how good Kershaw is? I mean look at that K/9 rate and compare that to his BB/9
it’s amazing.
